Laramie Smith, PhD
Assistant Professor, Divison of Global Public Health , UC San Diego, School of Medicine

Dr. Laramie Smith is an Assistant Professor of Global Public Health at the University of California San Diego's School of Medicine. Trained in social psychology, she applies social and behavioral theory, from a public health perspective, to examine how stigma and related social determinants of health impact HIV treatment and prevention for people living with HIV (PLWH) and substance-involved communities. Her research aims to strengthen engagement in the HIV care continuum among women and other key populations affected by substance use, violence, and HIV/ADS (SAVA) syndemic. This work has been applied to clinic-based research targeting retention in HIV care in the Bronx, NY, as well as secondary prevention and retention in HIV care efforts in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. More recently her work is focusing on on developing and evaluating community-focused interventions to improve engagement in the HIV prevention and care continuum for medically vulnerable key populations in Mexico (persons who inject drugs or engage in sex work, men who have sex with men [MSM], transgender women), and syndemic-affected Women in the United States.

This is a free lecture and is open to the public. The lectures are geared towards researchers, clinicians, students and hospital staff.
